Step by Step Stick Gnome St Patrick’s Day Craft
STEP 1
Gather all supplies. Cut approximately 30 individual strings from the cotton mop head with scissors. Get them damp under running water, squeeze the excess water out and place in a gallon zipper bag.
STEP 2
Squeeze orange acrylic craft paint into the bag, then zip it closed. Squish the paint into the cotton mop strings until they are all coated. Turn out the orange mop strings onto a garbage bag, and set aside to dry. I chose orange for St Patrick’s Day!
STEP 3
To create the Leprechaun’s hat, line up five jumbo craft sticks on your work surface. Using scissors, trim additional jumbo craft sticks to the width of the hat and attach with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Flip hat over and glue one jumbo craft stick to the hat base to create the brim. Trim one jumbo craft stick to the width of the hat to become the hat band.
TIP: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.
STEP 4
Basecoat the entire Leprechaun’s hat with bright green acrylic craft paint. Let dry, and apply a second coat, if necessary. Basecoat the Leprechaun’s hat band with black acrylic craft paint. Let dry, and apply a second coat, if necessary.
STEP 5
Download, Print and cut out the LEPRECHAUN GNOME PATTERNS. Trace onto yellow craft foam with a pencil, and then cut out with scissors. Glue the black hat band to the hat.
Attach the buckle to the center of the hat band with a glue gun and glue sticks.
STEP 6
Flip the Leprechaun hat over and attach 15 cotton mop head strings along the base of the bottom wooden craft stick with a glue gun and glue sticks. Mum will need to do this stage or an older kid can do this bit.
Glue 15 additional cotton mop head strings on a second layer. Good counting activity for young kids! Keep them involved by getting them to count out the orange strings!
Note, you don’t have to add exactly 15, I just found this gave a decent looking beard that was not too wiry!
STEP 7
Glue the wooden ball to the top center of the Leprechaun’s beard. Trace the shamrock pattern onto green craft foam and cut out with scissors.
To finish, attach a green button to the center of the shamrock and secure the shamrock to the Leprechaun’s hat with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Finally I added a rainbow ribbon! You can decorate your leprechaun gnome stick craft whatever way you wish, depending on the supplies you have to hand.
What about a leprechaun name for your gnome? I have tons of suggestions for you!
