Octopus Yarn Craft – Yarn Octopus Instructions

Have some fun with this octopus yarn craft for kids! Learning about the critters that live in the ocean is a little more difficult, as we can’t breath under water – and most people can’t get to the ocean to check out all the creatures.

My easy yarn octopus instructions will help you make a wool octopus.

Yarn Octopus Craft

These crafts will help bring some ocean critters to life at the crafting table! And, with this particular craft we can even bring the ocean creature to bed. We all know kids love taking a cuddly toy to sleep beside them!!

“Under the sea
Under the sea
Darling it’s better
Down where it’s wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin’
Full time to floatin’
Under the sea”

One of the best of Disney’s movies – gives a real life to what we can’t see in on the ocean’s floor. I know I picture an ocean filled with mermaids, Flounders and “Dingle Hoppers”.

It is one of the many movies that have given kids an interest in the ocean and what’s down there. Finding Nemo is another movie that has drawn attention to the ocean in the form of a fish but that’s for another post!

If you do like ocean critters you will also enjoy making this octopus mobile

Crafts with yarn and string are more simple than you think, plus you get to make keepsake crafts which can be gifted or played with.

Why not combine this with some of my other easy Octopus crafts for kids

How to Make a Yarn Octopus

A fun way to make a little octopus. Another cool thing is you can teach someone how to braid with this craft too!

Craft Supplies:

  • Ball of yarn
  • Ribbon or string (of a different color)
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Step #1:

Your octopus will need eight legs. We will also be braiding each leg – so we need 3 pieces of string for each leg. Now each string will be two legs.

Some quick math – three multiplied by four. This equals twelve. You will need to cut twelve equal lengths of yarn.

Step #2:

Ball up a piece of paper, or newspaper. You can also use cotton stuffing or craft foam. Place your four pieces of yarn into a star shape.

Step #3:

Place the balled up piece of paper in the center of your yarn. Take another piece of yarn and tie it around the newspaper and all the yarn pieces.

Step #4:

Take your ball of yarn, wrap it around the newspaper over and over. Repeat this until the entire newspaper is covered.

Step #5:

Grab three pieces of string and braid a leg. Repeat this for all eight legs.

Step #6

Cut eight lengths of string. We chose a pink string. Tied each one in a bow at the bottom of each braid.

Step #7

Glue your googly eyes onto the head.

Step #8

Using another length of string, glue a bow onto the top of the head.

A fun way to make ocean crafts for kids that will last a long time as a toy too.

Why not make a second one as a toy for your cat or dog too – they would love to fetch one of these.
