Bee Pinecone Craft for Kids

A fun bee pinecone craft for kids to create all kinds of cute things out of simple pinecones.  A fun activity to do before these crafts is a nice walk.

During your walk you will collect a handful of pinecones for crafting fun. Great for both mental and physical health.

As you collect these check to make sure there are not a bunch of bugs in them. We all know little kids can get a fright from bugs so best to remove them beforehand.

To be safe, if you wish to make sure there are no little critters, simply follow these steps:

  • Grab a bowl and fill it with water, add about a cup of vinegar.
  • Put your pine cones in the bowl and soak them for 20-30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 200 and line your soaked pine cones on a baking tray.
  • Put them in the oven for about 30 minutes.
  • Remove them and set them aside for 2-3 days to dry out completely.

You will now have critter free pine cones to craft with. Get ready to let the imagination run wild! You will be amazed at the number of different crafts you can do with these, but one of my favorite is this adorable bee.

Can you think of other animals you can make with pine cones? I am guessing you can make almost anything provided you have different colors of paint! How about a pink pig or black and white cow?!

I love bee crafts for kids (they are not going to sting you so you can actually play with them when you have finished making them).

Like most of my crafts they are step by step and use common craft supplies like pom poms and pipe cleaner.

Bee Pinecone Crafts for Kids: Pine Cone Bumble Bees

Craft Supplies:
  • Pine cone (cleaned and dried)
  • Paint (black & yellow)
  • Paintbrush
  • Large pom pom (yellow)
  • Small pom poms (black)
  • Pipe cleaner (white)
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue
Age Range:
  • 4 years and up

Time to Complete:

  • 45-60 minutes (plus drying time)

Step #1:

Paint your pinecone “bee” colored. This means to paint a row of the stems with black, then a row with yellow, and continue this until your pine cone is striped black and yellow. This is going to be your bee’s body.

Set aside the pine cone to dry.

Step #2:

Grab the large yellow pom pom. This is now going to be the bee’s head. Glue on your two googly eyes.

Once your eyes are in place, above them glue two small black pom poms as antennae.

If you want to change it up a little, you can use pipe cleaners for antennae rather than pom poms – let your creativity take over.

Step #3:

Bend a white pipe cleaner into two tear drop shapes for our bee’s wings.

Once your pine cone is dry, hold it with the narrow end down. Glue your wings to the larger end of the pine cone.

Step #4:

Take your bee’s head and glue it on the flat end of the pine cone. Allow everything to settle and dry.
