Stick Puppet Cat for Kids

I always love making puppets with my children because we had so much fun from our animal paper bag puppets. Previously I have made some animal family puppets including:-

Pig and Piglet Craft Puppets

Sheep and Lamb Popsicle Puppets

I plan to have puppet crafts for every animal I can think of. This is a great way to teach kids about the animal kingdom.

While you are doing the crafts you can talk to your kids about them. You can mention their natural habitat and the things they like to eat.

Cat paper crafts for children are hugely popular especially with those little ones that count furry friends as part of the family!

Cat Puppet Craft

Yield: 1

Cat paper craft that lets you make 3 cat puppets, Mummy, Daddy and Kitten.

Materials

1. Colored Craft Papers (you can find the colors as we go through the step by step guidelines
2. Popsicle Sticks (plain ones although you can paint and decorate these if you wish)
3. Pencil
4. Marker or Pen
5. Scissors for kids (good for practising hand eye coordination and fine motor skills)
6. Craft Glue (I normally use Pritt Stick)

Instructions

Step 1:

Select craft papers for the cat paper craft; I made the female cat first. Trace the cat patterns from the provided template on the selected craft papers.

You can use whatever colors you wish for Mummy cat.

Cut out the traced craft papers. - I would let older kids do this bit to let them make use of their fine motor skills.

Use different colored papers for the spots. I went for a darker shade for the spots compared to the body for contrast.

Step 2:

Attach the tail on either side of the (left or right) body of the cat.

Step 3:

The template includes 3 spot patterns. You can also use randomly cut small paper pieces for spots.

Step 4:

Attach a spot on the top end of the head and attach the other spots on the lower part of the body. Here again use the picture as a guide, but you are free to place them wherever you wish.

Step 5:

Attach the 2 leg cutouts on the bottom side of the body. These should be a lighter color than the rest of the body.

Step 6:

Use a pen or marker to trace the nose, eyes, mouth and moustache of the paper cat. Will your Mummy cat be happy or sad?! Guess that depends if her little kitten has been naughty or not.

Step 7:

Attach the paper cat on a popsicle stick to complete the cat puppet craft.

Similarly, craft the father cat and the kitten following the instructions above.
