They can be hung up in the front of the classroom for anyone to add cards or treats.

This hot air balloon version is probably suited to older kids, but my teddy bear Valentine Day Mailbox is perfect for pre-schoolers and those in the early years to make!

Materials

  • Wooden Heart Plaque – Dollar Store
  • Paper Plate, White, Dessert Size – Dollar Store
  • Ribbon, Red Checkered – Dollar Store
  • Craft Paint – Light Pink, Red and Brown
  • Cardstock, White - Scrap
  • Red Marker

Tools

  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Stapler

Instructions

STEP 1

Place all of your supplies on your workbench within easy reach.  Paint the wooden heart plaque with light pink paint.  Leave it to dry and apply a second coat, if you think you can see the original color coming through.

STEP 2

This is the fun bit for the kids! They get to make hearts by dipping their index finger into red paint and stamping onto the plaque twice in the shape of a “V”.  Repeat this pattern all over the heart. Try and space the hearts out but this can be difficult for kids.

STEP 3

Turn a paper plate over and paint stripes with brown paint.

Rotate plate and paint perpendicular stripes to create a woven or plaid pattern.  Here again you can change the pattern on the basket, but I think this is the best way to create the wooden look.

Next take a pair of scissors and cut the plate in half.

STEP 4

Measure with a rule and cut two twelve-inch lengths of red checkered ribbon with scissors.

Line up both halves of the paper plate and secure at the bottom with a stapler.

Insert ends of ribbon between paper plates and secure all edges with a stapler. Kids will need help with this bit.

STEP 5

Turn the wooden heart plaque over and attach both ribbons to the back using the glue gun and glue sticks.

STEP 6

Tie red checkered ribbon into a bow and glue to front center of the hot air balloon basket.

STEP 7

Measure and cut a scrap of white cardstock one-inch wide by three-inches long.  Write child’s name on cardstock with a red marker and then cut a “V” from end with scissors.  Attach name tag under bow with the glue gun and glue sticks. This makes this Valentine Mailbox personalized for your child.

Notes

You can mix and match different colors in this craft so you could do the heart red or whatever color you wish. You could also accent the balloon with stars or any shape you desire.

You could change the color of the basket and ribbon too.

Just follow the general craft step by step here and you are good to go.

I have lots of ideas for things to add to your Valentine Mailbox Craft including my Hershey’s Kiss Valentine Craft Treat or how about a heart pencil topper?!

One of my Valentine candy crafts would fit perfectly into this Valentine Day Mailbox!
