Easy Butterfly Drawing for Kids
Butterflies are so pretty and something all little children love! They come in so many different shapes and sizes!
The good news is that you can create your own with this easy to draw butterfly for kids! I have a free drawing template that helps 5 and 6 year olds make their own butterfly.

Step by Step How To Draw a Butterfly Easily – Butterfly Drawing Easy
For this easy butterfly drawing you will need a range of basic materials which can be used in future for other drawing tutorials
- Sketchbook
- Printable A4-sized paper.
- Pencil.
- Eraser.
- Ruler.
- Scissors.
- Color Pens.
- Black Gel Pen.
In order to make this Spring drawing idea as simple as possible we have also made a printable template to aid you.
Step by Step Butterfly Drawing Instructions:
Step 1:
Print out the butterfly outline template to make the stencils.
Step 2:
Cut out the large wing of the butterfly.
And place it in your sketchbook.
Step 3:
Use a pencil to draw around the stencil to draw the wing.
Step 4:
Similarly, draw the second wing.
Step 5:
Cut out the small design of the wing and place it on the upper part of the wing.
Step 6:
Draw around the stencil with the pencil to draw the design inside the large wing.
Step 7:
Cut out the teardrop shape from the template and place it on the bottom part of the wing.
Step 8:
Trace the teardrop shape on the wings.
Step 9:
Place the body in between the two wings. Your butterfly drawing easy is coming along very nicely now and starting to take shape!
Step 10:
Draw around the body stencil.
Step 11:
Erase the pencil lines inside the body.
Step 12:
Use free-hand drawing to draw two swirly antennas.
Step 13:
To add more details draw some polka dots on the wings.
Step 14:
Draw a few smaller polka dots and teardrop shapes inside the designs to give them more detail.
Step 15:
Outline the large wings.
Step 16:
Use a black marker pen to color the butterfly body and antennas.
Step 17:
Use a red marker to color the border.
Step 18:
Use yellow color to fill in the dots.
Step 19:
Fill in the teardrop shapes with a dark red color.
Step 20:
Use an orange shade to color the design inside the wing.
Step 21:
Color the rest of the wings using a pink color.
You do not have to use the template if you don’t want too. I have included it so that the youngest of kids can use it to draw an easy butterfly.

Tips on How to Draw a Butterfly Step by Step for Older Kids who do not want to use the template or my instructions
- Study butterfly anatomy by looking at lots of pictures. Look at the shape and size of their wings and where their antennae are.
- Sketch out the basic shape, if you follow my simple instructions above we do this.
- Add details after you are happy with how the basic shape looks
- Pay attention to symmetry: I am teaching my 7 year old about symmetry right now and she knows that both sides of the butterfly have to look the same.
- Use pictures of any species of butterfly and try and copy them.
- Experiment with colors: Butterflies come in all sorts of colors, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different shades and combinations. You can use colored pencils, markers, or paint to bring your butterfly to life.
- Practice and don’t be afraid to start all over until you are happy with your butterfly drawing.
