Easy Elephant Drawing for Kids

When I find cute animal pictures, I always challenge myself to come up with an easy kid drawing tutorial so that my children can copy it!

My little girl spends ages copying the video tutorials on YouTube; just recently she drew a squirrel, very well I may add. The next thing she is going to complete is my easy dog drawing for kids

I tend to do these in seasons so with it being Fall, I have completed a pumpkin drawing easy and a turkey drawing in the last month. 

We also enjoy coloring our completed drawings! Maybe next time I will use some of my zoo animal coloring pages for drawing inspiration. 

What you need for this Simple Elephant Drawing Step by Step

Gather up your supplies before you start to sketch this realistic elephant drawing. 

1. Sketchbook or Art Paper. 
2. Pencils (HB, 2B). 
3. Eraser. 
4. Ruler and Round Scale. 
5. Compass. 
6. Sharpener. 
7. Coloring Pens, crayons, etc.

How to Draw a Cute Elephant for Kids

If you can read and hold a pencil you can complete this elephant drawing easy! Do not be overwhelmed when you see the completed image.

This little guy starts off as a circle and an oval as shown in Step 1 below! The key is to go one step at a time and rub out something that does not look quite right. Little kids can do this too.

They will need to follow the picture instructions as opposed to the written ones (sometimes copying Mum and Dad as they do each step works a treat).

I made sure this ‘how to draw a simple elephant’ tutorial was short and sweet; it is only 14 steps long so not too long winded!

You can print this out and use it for a zoo animal school project during a themed learning week (printable instructions are at the bottom of the page).

Alternatively, you can use it for an after-school art club. It works well at home also! I love encouraging my children to follow instructions to draw a picture. 

Step 1: 

Draw a circle and draw an oval shape behind the circle by slightly overlapping the two shapes with each other.

Step 2:

Erase the overlapped areas of the oval shape from inside the circle shape., draw the elephant’s ears, and also erase the lines of the oval shape from the elephant’s ears. If the ear’s shape is difficult to draw you can use simple circle shapes to draw the ears. The choice is yours. 

Step 3:

Draw two squiggly lines to make draw the elephant’s trunk. 

Step 4:

Draw a round-shaped eye socket for the elephant.  

Step 5:

Draw the pupils. 

Step 6:

Draw another inner line along the outline of the ear.

Step 7:

Draw the elephant’s mouth. Draw the line from the trunk onto the face as shown. 

Your easy elephant drawing for kids is starting to take shape after a few simple steps!

If it does not look like this retrace your steps and use an eraser to correct any mistakes.

Step 8:

Yes, that’s correct he needs some legs to help him move. Draw one front leg and one hind leg.  

Step 9: 

Draw the other front leg behind the first front leg. Then draw the other hind leg behind the first hind leg. 

Step 10:

Draw the elephant’s paws. Use half-circular shapes to draw the paws.  Draw a small tail and add some lines to the trunk for more detail. You can see this all in the elephant pencil drawing picture below.

Now that is our picture completed in black and white. Next we need to start adding some color to make this a realistic elephant easy drawing

Step 11:

Use a grey shade to fill in the outline of the trunk. 

Step 12:

Use the same grey shade to fill in the head and outer outline of the ears. 

Step 13:

Color the entire body, tail, and feet using the same grey shade. 

Step 14:

Color the inner ear outline with a peach or pink shade. Then, color the nails with a light ash-grey shade.

Now that you have completed your easy elephant drawing you might want to tell everyone about it! Why not post it on your bedroom wall? My little girl has a notice board, where she pins her best drawings!

Why not give your cute elephant drawing a name? Don’t stop at a name, add some sentence and make your own story!
