Pom Pom Caterpillar Craft
Insect crafts for kids are not the creepy crawly, icky versons off bugs! No way! We have made them cute and colourful like this pom pom caterpillar craft.
Using pom poms and pipe cleaners makes this little guy fuzzy too!
You could make him longer or short too, just add more pom poms or less.
These little critters are bendable too so you can position them on lot of different surfaces – not just a flat spot.
Our little caterpillars can fit in your hand. Watch your kids carry them everywhere as their lovable pet. They might even give it a name!
How to Make a Caterpillar Pom Pom Craft
This caterpillar craft is a nice idea to welcome spring, because you will usually see lots of these critters during that season.
Craft Supplies:
- Pom poms (variety of colors)
- Googly eyes (bigger the better)
- Pipe cleaner
- Glue
- Scissors
Step #1:
Cut your pipe cleaner into 6 equal parts. Now, cut each of those six pieces in half again.
Put two aside for antanae, the rest are for your legs.
Step #2:
Bend the top and bottom of each of the leg pieces to make S shapes. In our case, we have ten legs.
Step #3:
Aff small black pom poms to the top of the two antenae pipe cleaners. Allow this to dry.
Step #4:
Glue your two large googly eyes to a black pom pom. This will be your caterpillars head. Add the two antenae above the eye balls.
Step #5:
Add a red or pink smaller pom pom to your caterpillar head for a nose.
Step #6
Glue together the body of your insect. You will want to have enough pom pom’s to match the amount of legs you made. In our case, we need five pom poms.
Step #7
Add two legs to each section of the body. Each leg across from one another on the body.
Step #8
Glue your head onto one end of the body. Allow everything to dry fully.
This little critter will not cause shrieks or screams, he’s just too cute!
As we mentioned above, because of the way we have made these insect crafts for kids, they are bendable and can be placed on surfaces that are not flat.
Here we made him climbing a little hill:
Look What Our Visiting Crafty Critters Have Created
From Madison, in Ohio (with help from mom, Karen)
My daughter Madison, age 8, had a wonderful time making this little pompom caterpillar, by following the directions on your site.
I did help her by attaching the legs with a hot glue gun, instead of using regular glue.
She had a lot of fun going through my collection of pom-poms and picking out the colors she wanted.

What a great idea to pick your own colors! I love Madison’s caterpillar!
